Experience

Past Project Experience

The following projects demonstrate the breadth of experience of Hybrid Chakra's personnel.

Hybrid Supervisory Controller

Embedded control systems were developed for the Ford Escape Hybrid program beginning from the very first prototypes all the way through to production.
  •  Rapid prototyping systems were used to have fast turnaround development times for the early prototypes.
  • Model based development with plant model simulation was used to design the control algorithms.
  • Automatic C code generation was used for the early prototypes. Rigorous production processes, including the systems engineering discplines were used to develop the production control system.
  • Desktop simulation, Hardware in the loop systems, powertrain dynos and vehicles were used to verify and validate the control system.

HEV to PHEV Conversion

A major commercial vehicle Tier 1 wished to convert an existing hybrid vehicle to a plug-in hybrid vehicle.
  • The requirements to perform the conversion from an HEV to a PHEV, by replacment of the existing battery pack with a high energy battery pack were defined.
  • A gateway for interfacing the high energy battery pack to the rest of the vehicle system was specified and built.
  • The system failure modes were analyzed and appropriate controls were put in place.

Hybrid Technology Decision Tree

A major government agency wished to understand the hybrid technology decision tree for use in its proposed rulemaking for fuel economy standards.
  • The benefits of different hybrid technologies from micro hybrids, mild hybrids (Belt Integrated Starter Generators and Crank Integrated Starter Generators), full hybrids (power split systems, 2 mode systems, series and other) through to plug-in hybrids were listed.
  • The cost associated with these systems was also analyzed.

PHEV Market Study

A major OEM wished to understand when it would be most beneficial for them to introduce a PHEV in the US market. They were interested in
  • The business/competitive aspects of the market.
  • The technological capabilities and limitations of the infrastructure and suppliers.
  • The different plug-in hybrid architectures.
  • The legislative and the regulatory climate surrounding this technology.
The deliverables of the market study were recommendations to the client in the form of the timing and type of PHEV that would be the most suitable for them.
